An exploration into the future of memorialisation using emerging technologies
Gravestones: Welcome
A headstone, or gravestone is a marker, usually made of stone which is placed over a grave.

Gravestones, also known as grave markers, are believed to date back as far as 3,000 B.C. to the Roman and Celtic era. The grave markers used then were unlike the gravestones we have nowadays. The markers were typically large monuments and were used to mark an entire burial chamber rather than a single grave.

In earlier times cemeteries did not exist and people had burial plots near their homes where all their family members would be buried together.

A lot of gravestones are inscribed with information such as the deceased’s name, date of birth, date of death and in the modern day, sometimes a personal message.

Gravestones and burial grounds have changed significantly to become what we have today. The funeral business has developed and the range of options available for gravestones or burial markers is vast.
